It is almost twice as hot as its followup, the Red Savina which is about 580 000 Scoville units. One seed from a Bhut Jolokia can produce sustained intense pain sensations in the mouth for up to 30 minutes before subsiding. The scoville scale measures the amount of capsaicin, which is a chemical compound that stimulates chemoreceptor nerve endings in the mucous membranes thus giving the impression of a burning sensation.
